When people think about finance professionals, they often think about technical expertise.
They imagine spreadsheets, reports, forecasts and complex calculations. Whilst all of those things are important, I've always believed that one skill matters just as much as understanding the numbers themselves. The ability to explain them.
Early in my career, I completed an interview process that included a theory and oral explanation assessment. I achieved 99 out of 100, which I was told was the highest score the company had seen at the time.
Of course, I was delighted with the result. But what stayed with me wasn't the score itself. It was the recognition that understanding something and being able to explain it clearly are two very different skills.
Over the years, I've seen many business owners become frustrated by finance. Often, it's because they're presented with information that feels overly complicated or disconnected from the everyday reality of running their business.
They receive management accounts, profit and loss reports and cash flow forecasts, yet they're still left wondering what it all means…. Are they performing well? Can they afford to recruit? Is cash flow healthy? Are they charging enough? What should they be focusing on next?
The answers are usually there within the numbers. The challenge is understanding the story those numbers are telling.
That's where I believe finance should be different.
At Finance with Flow, my role isn't simply to provide reports. It's to help business owners understand exactly where they are today, where they want to get to and what finance decisions will help them bridge that gap.
Sometimes that means explaining why profits aren't converting into cash. Sometimes it's helping a business owner understand the impact of growth on working capital. Other times, it's simply giving someone the confidence that they're making the right decisions because they finally understand the financial position of their business.
The most rewarding part of my role is giving business owners the confidence to make decisions backed by a genuine understanding of their finances.
I've always believed that finance shouldn't be wrapped in jargon or made unnecessarily complicated. Business owners have enough to think about without feeling overwhelmed by terminology and technical explanations.
That's why I focus on translating financial information into something practical, relevant and useful. Because numbers only add value when you understand what they're telling you.Not simply producing accurate figures, but helping people understand them well enough to make confident decisions for the future.
