“I had a meeting recently with someone who also provides a service that is construction focussed, I thought there might be some synergies.
We chatted about both our offerings and he then gave me some ‘advice’…..you might not want quite such a girlie branding, construction guys don’t want ‘pretty flowers’ – direct quote – well it’s actually a mandala, a sacred geometric shape representing the universe but ….
I didn’t think much of it, I’ve been a woman in construction long enough to not take these kinds of comments personally.
It did come up in conversation with a client a while after (male, MD) and he commented ‘I bet he wouldn’t have said that if he was talking to a man’ which did get me thinking, yes, I don’t get offended by this kind of thing but I’d forgotten that a male counterpart would not even likely encounter this type of comment.
I think being a woman in construction in my role has an advantage for me and my clients. In an often-alpha male environment, the guys sometimes find it easier to take suggestions for improvement as that, rather than as criticism. I also think they are much more open with me than they would be with a male counterpart, I often feel more like a coach than an FD – which I absolutely love.
The mandala wasn’t an accident, we are all connected souls and Finance with Flow allows me, and the whole team, to really become part of our clients lives and businesses.
So, I’m sticking with the ‘pretty flower’ and blossoming regardless.”
